My grandchildren have all had rocking animals and it's one of those toys that gives pleasure to kids year after year.

A Rocking Horse To Love - an online toy boutique - has seen sales of traditional, wooden rocking horses drop as customers choose the soft, plush toys that children can play with and ride on at very young ages.

A huge trend in rocking toys is soft, plush rocking animals sized for toddlers. Each year the variety offered by manufacturers grows and continually sells out before Christmas.

"The wonderful variety of toddler rocking animals continues to grow and yet it's still tough to keep them in stock. We expect again this year to have many of the favorites sell out well before Christmas," says Joan Winter, owner at A Rocking Horse To Love.

The store predicts the top three toddler rockers for 2011 to be:

1. Rockabye Colt Horse - this rocking colt horse is a customer favorite because it's the perfect "first rocking horse" and works as a gift for both boys and girls.

2. Bonita Butterfly Toddler - when the rocker is a gift for a girl, pink rules. There are several cute pink rocking toys, but Bonita Butterfly is a top pick because she combines pink with the little girl love of butterflies.

3. Fergie Frog - this one is fun and works well for boys and girls. This rocking frog dominated sales in 2010 and we're already seeing big numbers again for him in 2011.

These rocking toys are specifically sized for toddlers so they are ideal for a "Baby's First Christmas" gift or for a present for a child who is one or two years of age. And, unsurprisingly, one of the main customer groups is grandparents.

Says Mrs Winter, "my grandchildren have all had rocking animals and it's one of those toys that gives pleasure to kids year after year."
