As one year winds down and another one lies on the horizon, many young people are thinking more than ever about the decisions that will shape their future, including the decision of where to attend college or graduate school. For some young people, there may be just one school that stands out as an acceptable option. For many, however, the application process will involve seeking entry into several different institutions. This fact is driven home by the just-announced results of a new survey conducted by According to the survey, which asks site users how many schools they plan to apply to, the majority of prospective students will submit applications to five or more colleges or universities.

According to the results of the survey, which has been taken by more than 1,700 people, over half of the potential students applying to college, university, or graduate school will be submitting applications to five or more schools. More than 25% say they will submit to either 3 or 4—leaving under a quarter of those who took the survey saying they will apply to just one or two schools.

According to Jason Kay, the developer and company president of, these results go to show just how competitive college admission has become, but also how vital a good entry essay is. “Most students are applying to many schools, suggesting they anticipate rejection from at least a few of them,” notes Kay. “But with a good personal statement, the student can maximize the chances of making it into his or her top-rated school.”
