QLTS School’s records indicate that 28% of applications in 2011 for the QLTS course came from US attorneys...
(PRWEB) November 03, 2011
The QLTS is the new official transfer scheme of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the regulatory body of the Law Society of England and Wales. The QLTS replaced the previous regime, the QLTT (Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test) in September 2010.
Following the introduction of the QLTS, the SRA appointed Kaplan QLTS as the sole assessment organisation to provide the assessments.
The QLTS route involves three assessments, and unlike the QLTT there is no experience or training requirement for applicants. The QLTS is open to lawyers from international jurisdictions such as the USA, the European Union, Australia, South Africa, Russia, China, Japan, India and many others around the world.
The SRA recently reported on initial successes of QLTS by candidates who have completed the assessments and are admitted to the roll of solicitors.
QLTS School, a privately owned company, reports significant growth in the number of lawyers seeking to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales via the QLTS route. While many lawyers plan to practice in London or other cities in the UK, others simply want to enhance their professional profile and marketability in their home jurisdiction.
QLTS School reports that leading global law firms have also expressed interest in the new QLTS program, due to increased competition within the profession and the need to provide a diverse range of legal services to international clients with complex legal requirements. For these firms, having their international fee earners qualified as English solicitors through the QLTS presents an important opportunity to meet client demands, offer a full service capability and add value to their commercial offering.
QLTS School’s records indicate that 28% of applications in 2011 for the QLTS course came from US attorneys, followed by Australia (19%), Germany (9%) and Italy, Spain and India (8% each).
The new QLTS presents a unique opportunity for lawyers from and in the US in particular. With a strong bilateral relationship with the UK and the expanding presence of US-headquartered law firms in London, US attorneys can dual-qualify as English solicitors under QLTS, transforming them into transatlantic legal professionals.
The company is expanding its services into other jurisdictions and will offer both in-house and signature training for law firms.
