BRISBANE, Australia – Pablo Picasso once said, “Painting is a blind man's profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen.” In the new book of paintings and prose, “For Everyone: Words and Paintings” (published by Balboa Press) artist Kathryn Brimblecombe-Fox creates a collection of works that is sure to have readers ruminating about their life experiences.
“For Everyone” is a book of 30 paintings (all gouache, a water-based paint) each accompanied with lines of poetic prose. The text is short and provides open-ended clues and hints for the reader to make their own interpretations about each piece.
The paintings were created 14 years ago and were responses to Brimblecombe-Fox’s young children. “In the intervening years I have realized the paintings were much more than observations of my children,” she says. “They were insights into the inner child, or essence, which exists within everyone and responds to our experiences throughout our lives.”
Many of the paintings embrace a positive ownership of pride, potential and achievement. An example is ‘Potential’, a painting of a white figure with outstretched long arms, multiple rays emanating from its head and a red heart pounding in its chest. The figure is surrounded by a pulsating red, orange and gold dappling against a midnight blue background. The accompanying short poetic prose text, “Potential is like buried gold. Once discovered it shines and radiates brilliantly,” entices the reader into the excited realms suggested by the outstretched arms, emanating rays and the brilliance of color.
The paintings within “For Everyone” speak to all readers, whether young or old, male or female. Each has the capacity to trigger memories, insights, thoughts and dreams. The experience becomes the reader’s own journey.
