A cooperative of independent bike shops has joined together to launch a new website for cyclists, with a unique spin. The site, aptly named BikeStoreGuys.com, offers thousands of bikes, bike parts and accessories that customers can order online and pick up at local independent bike shops across the U.S. that are part of the Bike Store Guys dealer network. The twist is that customers can also have their parts or accessory orders shipped directly to their home, and the proceeds from those sales are shared collectively by the Bike Store Guys shops. Giving customers the convenience of buying online while knowing that their dollars are going back to local bike shops is what the Bike Store Guys set out to achieve from the outset.

“Everyone loves the convenience of buying online, but the growth of ecommerce has put significant pressure on local retailers who usually do not have the resources to compete online against large chain stores or corporations,” said Greg Brodsky, managing director of the co-op, known as The Bike Cooperative. “We have definitely been seeing it in the bike industry, and BikeStoreGuys.com is our response to this issue. Customers get the convenience of making their purchase online, and whether they decide to pick up their order at their local shop or have it shipped to their home, they can feel good knowing that their dollars are going back to local independent bike shops in their communities.”

Derek Stepanek, owner of Northtowne Cycling and Fitness in Cedar Rapids IA, a participating dealer in the Bike Store Guys network, added, “We know that if all things were equal, the vast majority of people would prefer to buy locally to support their community. We each have our own local store websites, but BikeStoreGuys gives us the ability to combine resources with other bike shops to compete on a national level and still support the ‘buy local’ movement. Whether the customer buys their bikes or bike gear from me directly or from BikeStoreGuys.com, either way the customer is contributing to local economies. At the end of the day, I think that’s what’s most important.”

BikeStoreGuys.com is the newest online player in the bike industry, supported by a network of independent bike stores with one common goal- to make the cycling experience extraordinary.
