Efforts help NY-family provide accessible living for daughter with dwarfism while furnishing meeting space for Little People advocacy group

“The real payoff came in knowing that we positively impacted the way this family functions within their home while adding increased comfort and accessibility for such a deserving little girl,” said Linda Nilon, co-owner, GilliN Custom Design.

GilliN Custom Design, a NY-based custom interior design shop with expertise in the automotive, home and commercial arenas, today announced their participation in a local home renovation project for ABC’s hit program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

In cooperation with the show’s design team, featuring Ty Pennington, GilliN Custom Design experts brought a distinctive aesthetic to several rooms of the home being customized to the unique needs of the Korpai family whose youngest member, Hailey, has a form of dwarfism.

“Of course we jumped at the chance to participate in a nationally televised and highly popular program of this caliber but that was just icing on the cake,” said Linda Nilon, co-owner, GilliN Custom Design. “The real payoff came in knowing that we positively impacted the way this family functions within their home while adding increased comfort and accessibility for such a deserving little girl.”

The episode aired October 16, 2011 and can be viewed at http://www.abc.go.com/shows/extreme-makeover-home-edition.

Specific elements furnished by GilliN Custom Design in the home’s common area included two wingback chairs in the living room and four dining chairs, one of which was modified for Hailey’s stature. “Knowing that Hailey now can sit comfortably with her family at the dining table warms my heart,” Nilon added.

GilliN Custom Design craftsmanship can be seen most prominently in Hailey’s bedroom where the team restored and/or upholstered several items, including a 15-foot bench with cushions and pillows, three oval back chairs for a tea set and sitting area, and a nine-foot, tufted headboard which served as a focal point in this Minnie Mouse themed room.

The project also provided a new home-base for the Little People advocacy group founded by Jimmy and Darlene Korpai whose mission is to offer education about dwarfism and support for families of little people. GilliN Custom Design staff contributed cushions for all of the desk stools, adding a touch of comfort for meetings, classes and other gatherings.

“It truly was an amazing experience to be able to help a local family,” Nilon concluded. “I hope the Korpai family enjoys the home for many years to come and that Hailey just loves her new bedroom!”
