The growing influence of spiritual centers is a leading topic among news outlets. While profiles of various religious movements garner column space across multiple publications, often missing is the one spiritual center growing steadily, though quietly, on every continent on the planet (sans Antarctica). The center? The Sukyo Mahikari Centers for Spiritual Development. To date, it has a membership of close to 1 million. And its numbers are increasing.
While headquartered in Takayama, Japan, the centers have regional headquarters throughout the world. In his new book : Is the Future in Our Hands? My Experiences with Sukyo Mahikari (published by iUniverse), former researcher and director of Sukyo Mahikari regional headquarters Andris K. Tebecis details his personal experience with the Sukyo Mahikari method and gives readers an intimate look at the inside workings of this distinctive spiritual center.
“Sukyo Mahikari is a unique international, non-denominational spiritual organization that involves improving the quality of life for all people and creatures, promoting health, harmony and material wellbeing,” says Tebecis. “The movement began in Japan, in 1959, as a result of revelations to Kōtama Okada, or Sukuinushisama, as he is generally called, and has spread to almost 100 countries, with over a million practitioners worldwide. After Kōtama Okada passed away in 1974, the leadership of Sukyo Mahikari was transferred to his daughter, Keishu Okada, or Seishusama, and now the spiritual leader is Kōō Okada, or Oshienushisama.”
The Sukyo Mahikari Centers for Spiritual Development’s teachings and practice center on the transmission of a special spiritual light energy. Traditionally performed through the hands, the “transmission” allows for cleansing spiritually, mentally and physically.
“Is it really possible for people to radiate a profound energy or power from the hand to help make a better world? Yes. People can apply universal principles (Sukyo) and radiate a special energy from the hand – True Light (Mahikari), which purifies the spirit, mind and body.
It really works. It is not a concept or wishful thinking. The practice towards positive change is practical and powerful, irrespective of people’s beliefs or background.”
Tebecis hopes the publication of Is the Future in Our Hands? helps to shine light on the Sukyo Mahikari method and alerts readers to the power they can access in order to help make a better world.
“Over more than 30 years I have been able to give True Light to tens of thousands of people, not to mention animals, nature, equipment – all kinds of things, so I know it really works and is wonderful. I want to share some of this in my book and point out how people can also experience valuable improvement.”
