There is nothing more sacred to the average teenage girl than her journal, except maybe a cell phone and hairbrush. It’s the one place a girl can document her inner-most thoughts and feelings without the imminent, looming judgment of peers and parents. It’s where most girls discover who they are and what they are about. In her new book “The Sweet Kiss of Friendship” (published by AuthorHouse) author Laura Hodges writes a creative story combining traditional storytelling infused with the character’s own journal entries and letters from her friend Jeremy.
The book begins with a diary entry from young Becky, dated in September 2004. She mentions meeting a new boy at school, whom she finds attractive. Throughout the story, her journal entries outline her life and the friends she makes along the way.
Diary Entry: July 15, 2006
I have totally neglected my diary because of my new boyfriend, Jeff. He is my first real boyfriend. (After all, who counts holdings hands and playing board games with Kyle in grade four?) Jeremy thinks this whole “boyfriend” thing is funny, but I told him he was just jealous because he couldn’t get a girlfriend. He couldn’t even get a date! Anyway, I am finally documenting this relationship down because Jeff ended it. He’s dating another girl! From a different school! How could he? My first real boyfriend—does anyone get over that loss? Clearly, even if my heart recovers from this event my social life will not…
In “The Sweet Kiss of Friendship,” readers will discover through conversations and thoughts how the two feel about each other and how their relationship grows.
“I think the book will appeal to readers as it provides a realistic romantic tale,” explains Hodges. “The problems all three characters experience, such as drinking, pressure to have sex, and a lack of confidence to pursue a romantic interest, are all problems many high school students face.”
