For the second consecutive year, Pearson leads the prestigious “Tech & Learning” magazine Awards of Excellence competition, with honors for seven of its online and mobile learning tools and programs. Now in its 29th year, this recognition program honors K-12 technology products that break new ground as well as those that added significant enhancements to proven education solutions.
Pearson’s 2011 Awards of Excellence winners are: myWorld Geography Digital Path, myWorld History Digital Path, NovaNET® Courseware, Pearson Social Studies Apps, Teacher Compass, StatCrunch and WriteToLearn. The winning products will be featured in the December 2011 issue of “Tech & Learning” magazine as well as on the website.
“Tech & Learning’s readers aren’t looking for bells and whistles,” said Kevin Hogan, Editorial Director for NewBay Media’s Tech & Learning Group. “Our readers are looking for rigorous ed-tech products that improve teaching and learning, inspire teachers and students, as well as meet today's assessment and standards requirements.”
About the Pearson Winners
Three of Pearson’s social studies programs are honored in this year’s Awards of Excellence: myWorld Geography Digital Path, myWorld History Digital Path and the company’s collection of engaging Social Studies Apps. Digitally driven social studies programs myWorld Geography and myWorld History allow students to develop a deeper understanding of the world by making personal connections to the people and places about which they are learning, by “taking them there” through virtual travel, storytelling and colorful, intriguing design. The Online Travel Assignment has students explore regions or time periods and complete a game-like assignment based on Essential Questions. Students gather information to complete the assignment by watching video interviews and stories, working through activities, and analyzing and examining maps, data and artifacts. They capture their thoughts and record their observations in the myTracker and send their “assignment” directly to their teachers. The company’s growing collection of Social Studies Apps allows students to go mobile while learning through interactive games, flashcards and quizzes on topics such as American and World History.
Earning its first recognition in the “Tech & Learning” Awards of Excellence, Teacher Compass is a customizable online teacher evaluation and coaching system developed in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University. Teacher Compass has been used successfully by K-12 districts to collect and analyze teacher observation data with accuracy, ease and efficiency; improve feedback on teacher performance; and create personalized professional development plans that increase teaching effectiveness.
