Dr. Mitzi Hines, owner of Hines Little Smiles, and her team used the entire month of October to give back to their community, their patients and service men and women with three exceptional events – a Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser, a Pumpkin Carving Contest and a week-long Halloween Candy Buy Back. Hines Little Smiles started with a “Join the Fight” fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Awareness charity efforts. Contributions flooded in, filling the Hines Little Smiles donation wall with pink ribbons that ultimately resulted in a whopping $3,202.50 in donations. Dr. Hines matched donations up to $1,000 and during the fundraiser, several other businesses joined in the giving, with some even pledging to match Hines Little Smiles donations up to $1,000.

Donations were received at the Hines Little Smiles office, but also came through as prize conversions from the popular Tuesday Trivia contests, hosted on Facebook, where the usual winning prize became a donation made in the winner’s name.

The three-week fund raiser spoke to a cause that is close to the hearts of the Hines Little Smiles practice family. Breast Cancer Awareness supports vital education that can save lives and creates the best potential for timely diagnosis and treatment. Hines Little Smiles primary goal is to make every child's dental health experience a positive one that will stay with them well into their adult lives. Prevention, timely diagnosis and regular treatment are principles that Dr. Hines at her team teach daily in their practice. Following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, they recommend a child's first visit to the dentist occur shortly after their first birthday. Through the efforts of their Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser, Hines Little Smiles hopes to further preventative care possibilities for those suffering breast cancers.

In addition to their primary fund raiser, the dentists and staff at Hines Little Smiles ramped up their efforts by participating in the Hunt for Hope Scavenger Hunt in Delaware – adding their $3,202.50 in donations to the over $28,000 gathered by the event.

October also brought back an annual Hines Little Smiles Halloween event kids love – a pumpkin carving contest. The pumpkin carving contest started off with a bang, as pictures of kid-carved pumpkins were posted on the practice’s Facebook page. Winning pumpkins were chosen in the following categories: "Most Creative", "The Spookiest", "The Coolest" and "The Best of Carving and Decorating." Pictures of the winning pumpkins can be seen on the practice Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/hineslittlesmiles.

Finally, as a special give-back opportunity for children themselves, October’s charitable theme continued into early November with the Hines Little Smiles Halloween Candy Buy Back. The premise was simple and goes straight to the heart: Children brought in their unopened Halloween candy during normal business hours the week after Halloween and earned $1 for every pound of candy they donated. The donated goodies were delivered to Operation Gratitude and will then be sent on to the service men and women serving our country. To cap this fun sharing and caring event, a prize was awarded to the youngster who donated the most candy.

No strangers to giving back, the team at Hines Little Smiles was delighted with the success of their fundraisers this month and are ever anxious to add to their community-enriching roster of charitable activities.
