Perfect Places Offers Discounts to Triathletes Booking Vacation Rentals at Qualifying Ironman Races

Vacation rentals give triathletes and other multi-sport athletes more control over their race experience, said Matt Smolsky of PerfectPlaces.com.

Athletes at this level have very specific nutritional requirements, more gear, and generally need to be in greater control of their surroundings

With the completion of Ironman® Florida in Panama City, FL, on Saturday, a big question looms for triathletes attending races around the world--where can a competitor book accommodations and save money at the same time? PerfectPlaces.com offers vacation rentals near major qualifying races, said Matt Smolsky, Marketing Manager at PerfectPlaces.com, and will offer discounts to the first 10 triathletes booking accommodations at qualifying races.

Ronnie Schildknecht, Switzerland, won the men's division in 7:59:42 and Jessica Jacobs, USA, won the women's in 8:55:10. They automatically qualify for the Ironman® World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on October 13, 2012. There were also 2,500 athletes in age group divisions competing for 65 slots for the World Championship. Ironman Florida is one of 26 qualifying races held domestically and internationally. An Ironman distance triathlon consists of swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and running 26.2 miles (a full marathon).

While many of the races are held in popular tourist destinations such as Panama City, some are held in locations that don’t have as many rental options. This, and the more complex needs of triathletes and other multi-sport athletes, make vacation rentals an ideal choice, according Smolsky.

Perfect Places will offer up to $500 off a booking at an Ironman qualifying race to the first 10 athletes who book reservations, Smolsky said. Accommodations for qualifying races fill up quickly, Smolsky said, so booking as early as possible will ensure savings and an ideal place to stay. Specific discounts will depend on the property and length of stay.

"When it comes to triathlons and other multi-sport events, vacation rentals have a natural advantage over other types of accommodations," Smolsky said. "Triathletes and other multi-sport athletes have unique needs when it comes to accommodations.

“Athletes at this level have very specific nutritional requirements, more gear, and generally need to be in greater control of their surroundings. A vacation rental gives them that control," Smolsky said. “Plus, triathletes require a lot of support from family and friends. More often than not, you’ll see a competitor arrive at the race with their spouse, kids, parents—whoever is in their support network. A vacation rental gives everyone room to spread out and enjoy the event.”

Smolsky’s thoughts are echoed by Nick Benoit of Knutson Associates, a leading property management company in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, site of the Ironman World Championship.

"The triathletes that stay with us like the fact that they have a full kitchen and can cook the food they're supposed to eat for their training rather than going out," Benoit said. "They like to store their bikes in their rooms directly. Most of our properties are on Ali'i Drive, so when they need to, they can just walk their bikes right down to the where the race starts."

Benoit said the popularity of vacation rentals among multi-sport athletes is evidenced by their bookings. "We are booked 100% 8 months to a year in advance," he said. "There are cancellations due to not qualifying for the Ironman or injuries, so rentals do open up during that time." Benoit said race participants stay about 10 days on average.

If you’re interested in participating in an Ironman, here is a list of the upcoming races. If you’re planning on attending or participating in any of these races, be sure to book early. Both the races and vacation rentals fill up quickly.
