Urban Airship today announced that it has raised $15.1 million in Series C funding to help brands and developers create the next generation of cutting edge mobile apps. Strategic investors including salesforce.com and Verizon participated in the round, along with existing investors Foundry Group and True Ventures. The investment brings the total raised by Urban Airship to $21.6 million, and follows on the heels of the company’s acquisition of SimpleGeo.
Urban Airship is one of the fastest growing mobile infrastructure companies, with more than 20,000 customers including most of the top media brands worldwide. The company’s revenue has grown exponentially year over year, fueled by developers who are building Urban Airship into tens of thousands of mobile apps, and using its back-end platform services to power context-rich in-app communications with customers.
“The velocity of change just won’t stop in mobile and we are working hand in hand with some of the world’s biggest brands to help them set their mobile strategies, and create experiences that consumers will love,” said Scott Kveton, CEO, Urban Airship. “Right on the heels of our SimpleGeo acquisition, we’ve got the best team, best technology and a proven business model. Now, with this infusion of capital, the Airship is set to really take off.”
The new capital, combined with the acquisition of SimpleGeo, puts Urban Airship in the position to offer a complete mobile engagement platform - including a scalable infrastructure and range of tools and services. The backing from key strategic investors makes it clear mobile is something that’s on everyone’s minds. Push notifications, in-app purchasing, subscriptions, context and geo-location will come together on a single platform, enabling developers to build a new class of apps that are smarter, more context-rich and more valuable to consumers.
