Ohanarama's commitment to education and reading, and focus on intergenerational family learning and fun, make it an ideal partner...
New Haven, CT (PRWEB) November 07, 2011
Ohanarama, the safe social network for families to connect, learn and play together online, today announced that 50 books from Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series were donated to New Haven Reads, a community reading resource center and tutoring program in New Haven, CT. The books were donated on behalf of the Sabra family, winners of Ohanarama’s third Family Contest, courtesy of Random House Children’s Books.
Ohanarama sponsors monthly Family Contests during which families compete against each other online in three educational and fun games, and vie for the highest combined score. As first place winners, the Sabra family received a Kindle 3G, a $50 Amazon Gift Card, and a $100 value book donation to the elementary school library or literacy program of their choice. The second and third place winners also received prizes and books donations.
“We are so excited that the Sabra family chose New Haven Reads to receive Ohanarama’s book donation, and very grateful for Random House’s generous gift to our program. The abundance of Magic Tree House books is going to make our younger readers very happy,” said Kristen Levinsohn, Executive Director of New Haven Reads. “Ohanarama’s commitment to education and reading, and focus on intergenerational family learning and fun, make it an ideal partner for New Haven Reads and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
About New Haven Reads
The overall goal of New Haven Reads is to provide an environment where children and adults have access to free books and where school-age children receive tutoring to increase their literacy skills and academic performance. New Haven Reads places particular emphasis on serving the most economically and educationally disadvantaged children and families who otherwise would not have access to these resources. Run primarily by volunteers from across the community, New Haven Reads seeks to create a safe environment with casual role models for positive behavior and to foster intergenerational learning experiences.
Ohanarama is the safe social network for families to connect, learn and play together online. Through Ohanarama.com or Facebook, parents set up their kids’ accounts and invite immediate and extended family members to join the secure, private family network. Once joined, elementary-age kids and their parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents can send messages, engage in educational and fun family games and contests, and earn real and virtual rewards including gift cards to favorite stores. Led by technology industry veterans who have launched such products as the JumpStart children’s educational series and Zynga’s Petville, Ohanarama is also backed by investors such as Charles Huang, the founder of Guitar Hero, and venture capital partners, SoftBank Capital and Contour Venture Partners. Ohanarama is the first product launched by BrainRewards, Inc.
