Today’s teachers face challenges that were unimaginable decades ago. Between the years 1950 and 1970, teachers with 2-year degrees and no experience in behavior management and learning disabilities were the norm. In recent times, however, more prerequisites are put in the teacher’s already full plate. In her book, Laugh and Learn - Confessions of an Elementary School Teacher, Megan Broderick takes readers on a hilarious and eye-opening journey into the life of an elementary school teacher and what the academe and life demands of her.
Broderick gives a sincere, at times comic, account of the storms that today’s teachers have to weather through from surviving the first day of school, to taming chatty and rowdy kids, to devising “politically correct” lesson plans, to dealing with apprehensive parents, to keeping up with the latest technology. The author shares how she came to choose teaching as her profession, the things she realized within the four walls of the classroom and the adventures she and her pupils had there.
This book partly pays homage to the teachers that have devoted their lives to shape generations. The author writes, “We all have our own favorite memory of that special teacher, that special someone that reached us and touched our hearts in some way. To many, it was a teacher in grade school that could have helped us learn how to read, learn to add, learn to build our confidence, or learn to be a helping hand. That steady face that welcomed us each day and had our best interests in mind. Yes, she helped me to become who I am today.”
Weaving personal experiences, recollections and wit, Broderick’s book offers an insightful reading experience and recognizes the efforts of people working in the field of education. Readers, especially, first-time teachers and professionals in the academe will find Laugh and Learn - Confessions of an Elementary School Teacher an enlightening and equally entertaining read.
