Josh Early Candies is a family owned and operated chocolatier with over 100 years experience in the confectionary business. This month marks another milestone in their rich history as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company headquartered in the Lehigh Valley. They are commemorating the event both in store and online.

Very few companies find success for more than a generation, but Josh Early Candies is one of those rare exceptions. Josh Early Candies is a company whose history is as diverse as the chocolates they offer. The company started in 1904 when Joshua R Early sold candy out of his Reading, PA store. The business was then passed from generation to generation and ultimately grew to include a full line of handmade chocolates all made from original family recipes. In 1961, Joshua R. Early’s grandson pioneered his own business in Allentown, PA and for the past 50 years Josh Early has been making candy, all by hand, right in the Lehigh Valley. Their stores in both Allentown and Bethlehem are local institutions and continue to bring smiles to the faces of locals and visitors alike.

“This is a family business that goes five generations deep.” Remarks Barry Dobil Jr, the store’s 5th generation candy maker. “My great-great grandfather started the business in Reading Pennsylvania at the turn of the 20th century. Ultimately, it was my grandfather, Josh Early, who moved the business to the Lehigh Valley in 1961. Our first store was on Hamilton Street, close to where Dorney Park is currently located.”

To celebrate their 50 years as a local business that has been continually family-owned, Josh Early is showcasing some of the more interesting and unknown facts on their website blog at blog.joshearlycandies.com as well as in their stores.

“One of the things people always ask about are the pictures that are on the wall in our Allentown store,” says Barry Dobil, Sr, the 4th generation candy maker. “The pictures showcase what our family business is all about. I learned the business from my father in law; I have now passed that knowledge onto my son and get to work alongside my wife and sister-in-law, Josh’s two daughters. Today we hope to continue the family tradition and build on the legacy that their dad established when he introduced the brand to the Lehigh Valley 50 years ago.
