24 Hour Campaign Will Raise Funds for Veterans Facing Financial Hardship

Our goal is to help military heroes pay for basic services – such as a monthly mortgage or utility payments – while they navigate a difficult job market.

With unemployment among veterans unacceptably high, the Mercy for Me charity will use Wednesday’s Greater Washington “Give to the Max” fundraising day to aid military heroes. Mercy for Me will raise funds to provide financial grants to military veterans so they can cover basic living expenses while seeking employment. “Give to the Max” organizers have pledged additional rewards for charities that meet certain performance benchmarks.

“Wednesday’s Give to the Max event represents a crucial chance to give back to U.S. veterans as they seek employment,” said Jason Bryan, Mercy for Me’s Director of Program Outreach. “The unemployment rate among veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan is far too high - nearly 30 percent higher than the civilian unemployment rate. Our goal is to help them pay for basic services – such as a monthly mortgage or utility payments – while they navigate a difficult job market. It’s the least we can do to help those who risked life and limb to keep America safe.”

The Give to the Max Day event was created by online fundraiser Razoo with support from The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region and United Way of the National Capital Area. These groups have united to offer any local 501(c)(3) the opportunity to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash awards on Wednesday.

In August, Mercy for Me won Global Giving’s worldwide fundraising challenge by raising nearly $30,000 for its Military Heroes Hardship Relief Fund. Since then, Mercy for Me has sent grants to veterans in California, Missouri, and Maryland, with additional grants currently being processed.
