OpenDNS, the world's largest and fastest-growing provider of Internet security and DNS services that deliver a safer, faster and more intelligent Internet experience to everyone, today announced the city of Portland, Ore., home to nearly 600,000 residents, has deployed OpenDNS across its entire municipal network to provide comprehensive cloud-based Web filtering and lock down its network from evolving malware threats. The city of Portland is known for its forethought in technology, urban planning, green technology and creative industries.

Prior to deploying OpenDNS, the city of Portland explored multiple solutions for Web content filtering but none provided a robust feature package, including protection from malware and Internet threats, which could easily be deployed across multiple locations. Because the public Wi-Fi can be accessed by any of the city’s nearly 600,000 residents at several hotspot sites throughout the city, in addition to all city employees, Information Systems Analyst Matt Cavaness required a solution that would not only provide granular filtering, protection from malicious sites and custom block lists, but also critical remote manageability and deployment.

“We needed a filtering approach that was easy to implement, inexpensive and could accommodate actively maintained block lists. But, we also needed it to provide protection against malicious sites, malware and phishing,” said Cavaness. “When a DNS-based filtering approach was determined to be the best, several colleagues recommended we look into OpenDNS.”

The city of Portland selected OpenDNS for its ease of integration, robust Web filtering settings, stats and reporting, unique ability to protect against malware at the DNS level and remote management capability that would save the IT team countless resources through the deployment process and during network monitoring.

“Our experience with OpenDNS has been excellent and I would absolutely recommend the service to other SysAdmins and municipalities,” said Cavaness. “We saved time and money, integration was a breeze and we’ve heard zero complaints since deployment – In our line of work that means a service, in this case OpenDNS, is doing a superior job.”
