About a third of hospitals in the United States now have a position for a business manager, and over half of the teaching hospitals and larger surgical facilities have business managers. Business managers in the OR are responsible for financial analysis, product selection, the annual budget, billing and purchasing, and materials management. The average operating budget for the surgical suite in U.S. hospitals is $32 million, according to the annual OR Manager survey.
The focus of the workshop is on developing analytical thinking skills as well as an understanding of financial management of the OR. Topics include financial forecasting, budgeting, supply chain management, strategic planning, project development, operational efficiencies, and quality measurement.
Three experts in OR management will lead the workshop. Judy S. Dahle, MS, MSG, RN, education coordinator for OR Manager, has served in perioperative services in clinical and executive positions. Brian A. Dolan, MHSA, RHIA, CHDA, SSGB, is perioperative services business operations manager at the University of Kansas, Kansas City. Jerry Ippolito, MBA, MHSA, president of OR Efficiencies, LLC, is a perioperative services business management consultant.
