Walnut Square’s newest and most intriguing retail store, A Priori, is now open for business. Lisa Tana, one of A Priori’s partners and well-known Bay Area retailer, is connecting with local Berkeley shoppers and drawing loyal customers from her prior retail ventures. Grand Opening week will take place November 14-19.
According to Tana, “A Priori is the culmination of my dream of making a wide variety of modern sustainable products – mindfully sourced and beautifully designed – available to shoppers who are conscientious about their purchases.” She says the name, literally translated from Latin, means “of the priori” or “from what came before,” reflecting her dedication to creative re-use of existing resources.
Located in the famous gourmet ghetto district of North Berkeley, A Priori is well situated amongst other Walnut Square shops, and entices shoppers in by its owner’s merchandising savvy and the gallery-like displays and lighting. Visitors can find unusual gifts and accessories as well as functional, well-designed items for the home. Some of the local artists whose products are available at A Priori include Liz Dickey (1 by Liz) who uses recycled bike parts and vintage fabrics to make unique wall clocks, Noriko Kawamoto (Umi) a Richmond jewelry designer working in sterling silver and gem stones, and fine art cards by Balinese transplant, I Made Moja.
A Priori’s owners intend to build a loyal community of shoppers through special product showcases and support of local schools and non-profit organizations. In addition, they hope to instill a sense of pride in “locally produced” that goes far beyond the food movement so evident in Northern California.
A Priori is located at 2112B Vine St., Berkeley, California. 510.575.6307
