Naked Wines is a great example of how the internet and e-commerce can revolutionise a market - and an exceptional example of the future of integrated stakeholder oriented business.

Norwich-based wine retailer Naked Wines, who is approaching its third birthday, has just been named the UK’s Online Business of the Year at the prestigious National Business Awards 2011, sponsored by Orange.

The company, which has recruited over 200,000 customers since launching in December 2008, saw off nine other finalists to win the title, including LOVEFiLM, Quidco, Feather & Black and Entertainment Magpie Ltd.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osbourne opened the awards ceremony with the following words of encouragement:

“It’s an honour to be invited to speak at the National Business Awards and to celebrate everything that is so exciting about the business community in our country. You may represent very different businesses in very different parts of the country – but you all have one thing in common – you embody the spirit of enterprise that must be at the heart of Britain’s economic future.”

And the judging panel, comprising of 100 CEOs and senior directors from across the UK, added:

“Naked Wines has created an innovative approach to putting suppliers in direct contact with the customer. It’s used the internet to revolutionise a tried and tested model to bring extra value to all stakeholders. Naked Wines is a great example of how the internet and e-commerce can revolutionise a market – as well as a business.”

Rowan Gormley, Founder of Naked Wines, thanked all those involved:

“I'd like to dedicate this award to twelve crazy friends who left the security of their jobs in the depth of the recession to help me launch the business. And to our winemakers, business partners and customers for supporting us along the way - and embracing a new way of doing things.

When we launched, we knew we had to create a game-changing model to make our mark, and by bringing customers and winemakers together through the power of the web, we’ve created 85 delicious new wines which otherwise wouldn’t exist – and stripped away a lot of the pretence and stuffiness typically associated with an age-old industry.”

Naked Wines, who has seen over 100% growth year-on-year, is on course to turnover £25million this financial year - and Founder, Gormley, has recently launched a new venture called WineDemon, a free iPhone app designed to help save people from socially embarrasing wine situations.
