Winning this MarketingSherpa award for our agency work with Travelocity on its recent win-back campaign is a testament to what can be accomplished with a creative approach, thorough analysis of the customer and a solid execution of fundamentals.

A Gold Prize winner in the "Best Promotional Email or Campaign" category, the winning campaign was selected for its skillful application of creative and strategy that enabled the campaign to increase ROI more than 100% from previous efforts.

The winners of MarketingSherpa's 7th Annual Email Marketing Awards were announced on its website on November 7th and are featured in a new special report: "MarketingSherpa Email Awards 2012: 19 award-winning B2B and B2C email marketing campaigns." The annual awards feature the best email marketing campaigns of the past year, as selected by a panel of five expert judges from MarketingSherpa's editorial, analyst and marketing staff.

The winning entry details how Travelocity engaged StrongMail's Agency Services team to launch a creative win-back campaign to reengage customers who booked travel through Travelocity in 2009 but not in 2010. Instead of a straight "we want you back" campaign, StrongMail and Travelocity decided to create "valued customer" messaging that capitalized on past loyalty and emphasized their inclusion in an exclusive group of Travelocity customers. By coupling this approach with a single-use discount code, a compelling subject line, striking imagery and thorough testing, the campaign generated two to three times greater ROI than similar programs, as well as a 12.3% increase to Travelocity's bottom line.

"Email marketers are constantly challenged to extract more value from their lists," said lead judge Adam T. Sutton, Senior Reporter, MECLABS Primary Research. "Many turn to inactive or non-purchasing subscribers to boost conversions – but this can feel like squeezing blood from a stone. This team used a touch of creativity and a solid strategy to not only engage, but increase sales from these tough subscribers, and it increased ROI more than 100% from previous efforts."
