Dr. Scott Press, Board Certified Urologist, has established a painless, non-invasive kidney stone treatment-called Lithotripsy-that uses shock waves to break up stones that form in the kidney and ureter. Now, convenient for residents of Eastern Long Island at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, New York.
Lithotripsy is recommended for patients with stones that are large in diameter or unusual in shape. These stones can get stuck or impacted in the ureter and cannot be passed during normal urination.
"For those patients who are not lucky enough to pass their stones naturally and whose stones are large in size, the Lithotripsy procedure may be the perfect option," said Dr. Press.
Candidates for this procedure go through a series of tests, including a full physical exam, a CT scan without contrast and in some cases, a sonogram, to determine the exact size, location and number of stones the patient is carrying.
During lithotripsy, ultrasonic waves are passed through the body until they strike the dense stones. Pulses of sonic waves pulverize the stones, which are then more easily passed through the ureter and out of the body in the urine.
Post surgical care requires patients to drink plenty of water and other clear liquids. They may be given a prescription for medications to relieve pain, prevent infection and reduce inflammation Some patients experience soreness in the back but can resume normal activity in a day or so after the procedure.
Lithotripsy has a high success rate and approximately 90% of patients who undergo this treatment are completely symptom free within 3 months of treatment.
