These R-Cast® windows display several South American Arapaima which are considered to be one of the largest fresh-water fish in the world.

Visitors to the new Rainforest area at Ocean Park in Hong Kong can now experience an array of flora and fauna indigenous to rainforests of the world with the help of transparent R-Cast® acrylic windows in several of the exhibits. RPT Asia, Ltd., a subsidiary of Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. in the U.S., engineered and manufactured the panels for the new exhibit.

In total, five windows were designed and manufactured for installation into four exhibits – the Capybara, Arapaima, Tortoise, and mini-snake exhibits. While remaining relatively simple, the windows provide unique underwater views and into nesting sites that would otherwise be impossible to view in the wild.

“While the windows are not overly complex designs, they clearly demonstrate their effectiveness in bringing this exhibit area to life for the visitors,” said Roger R. Reynolds, III, CEO of both RPT and RPT Asia, Ltd. “That’s the beauty of using acrylic – the versatility it offers to customers and the beauty of sharing what’s behind the window to guests.”

Two windows feature corners that utilize RPT’s proprietary bonding process. One of these windows is more than 15 feet long (4.8m) on the longest side of the corner and nine feet tall (3m) at three-and-a-half inches thick (89mm). Another window is nearly 12 feet long (3.8m) by slightly more than 11 feet tall (3.5m) at three-and-a-half inches thick (89mm). The last window is semicircular and set into an artificial tree. This window stands nearly 10 feet tall (3m) and gives visitors a view into a nesting site in the hollow of a large tree.

Because one of the panels was installed outdoors, temperature fluctuations were taken into consideration when designing the panel.

One of the reasons R-Cast® acrylic was chosen is because its strength leads to a superior ability to withstand weathering, bolstered by UV stabilization to prevent yellowing from occurring.

Ocean Park is considered to be a world-class park and as such, prides itself on high-quality exhibits. RPT’s extensive, decades-long experience with manufacturing panels for large-scale commercial aquariums, the high quality of R-Cast® acrylic, and a local representative in Hong Kong to immediately answer technical questions all contributed to the award of this job to RPT from Ocean Park and the Hong Kong government. The Rainforest section of Ocean Park opened to visitors in June 2011.
