On November 18, 2011, virtually all the living legends of NYC graffiti will converge in Harlem for “Graffiti 2011: Back To Our Roots” to celebrate the art form that was born, discovered and made famous in New York before evolving into a worldwide phenomenon.

In graffiti’s early days, the trains were the canvases for disenfranchised youth to express themselves and create their voice. In celebration of the significance the subway system has had on the art form, a number of the culture’s most influential artists have created new works using the “Subway” map as their canvas to capture the genius of these new urban artists. This is the final major show of the 2011-year and is poised to leave attendees in awe one map at a time.

According to curator and host James Top, “many of the artists in this exhibition have given tremendous contributions to the evolution of this art and are now going back to the creative roots that were initially the inspiration for their expression. If you have never attended a graffiti art exhibition before, this is the one you can’t miss.” In addition to the subway map canvases, famed street photographer Jamel Shabazz will be making a special presentation of his work.
