Electronic Prescribing Now Available From BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy

BioPlus invests in e-prescribing technology with the goal of reducing errors, lowering costs, and improving patient compliance.

BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy (BioPlus), one of the nation’s leading specialty pharmacies, now has electronic prescribing available for physicians to electronically submit an accurate, error-free prescription directly to our pharmacy. BioPlus is investing in this technology to lessen the risk of errors, lower costs, and improve compliance. With e-prescribing, a paper prescription that the patient would otherwise carry or fax to the pharmacy is replaced by electronic transmission of the prescription directly from the physician to the pharmacy.

The use of computerized medication order entry could potentially prevent up to 84 percent of dose, frequency, and route errors in medication use, according to data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. In addition, e-prescribing improves patient safety by lessening the chances of a prescribing error due to poor handwriting or ambiguous nomenclature.

BioPlus’ e-prescribing technology falls in line with AHRQ’s suggestion of leveraging technology to eliminate medication errors. Aside from the benefit of improved patient health, e-prescribing offers the financial benefit of lowering costs related to medical errors. These costs can be significant, as shown in a study earlier this year in the journal Health Affairs finding that the estimated total cost of measurable medical errors in the United States is $17.1 billion annually, with the most frequent medical injuries being adverse events associated with medications. Additionally, with e-prescribing it is easier for the prescriber to select a medication that is preferred by a patient’s health plan (while meeting therapeutic guidelines).

“Electronic prescriptions were the next step in our Quality Improvement Program, not only ensuring prescription accuracy and security of patient data, but also increasing efficiencies in our clinical departments allowing us to further focus on our key objective – measurably improving patient outcomes,” says Eric Jackson, Director of Technology and Operations at BioPlus.

BioPlus is as an industry leader for improving several specialty pharmacy metrics. In addition to this latest effort to lessen medication errors through e-prescribing, BioPlus is continually working to achieve the best possible patient compliance. In tracking compliance statistics for its treatment programs, BioPlus is proud to report that the latest data, which includes more than 22,200 patients sampled from treatment programs for hepatitis, oncology, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, and other conditions shows that BioPlus achieves a 91 percent compliance rate at discharge. The compliance rate for retail and mail-order pharmacies is only 50 percent.
