Ergotron was recently recognized among an elite group of organizations, achieving both a Gold Fit-Friendly Company award by the American Heart Association and an additional Gold Award for WorkSite Innovation.
“We are honored and excited that our commitment and contributions to employee health and wellness are recognized at this level by the American Heart Association,” said Joel Hazzard, Ergotron president and CEO. “We are committed to enhancing the lives of our employees by offering healthy food choices, encouraging standing meetings and standing work options, and allowing individuals to take breaks in their day for walking.”
The American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Companies Program is a catalyst for positive change in the American workforce that recognizes companies who make employee health and wellness a priority. Gold-level employers:
- Offer employees physical activity options in the workplace
- Increase healthy eating options at the worksite
- Promote a wellness culture in the workplace
- Implement at least nine criteria outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture
- Demonstrate measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness
Since sitting disease, which is induced by long periods of sitting, can impose dangerous—even deadly—health risks, Ergotron’s wellness program extends to the workspace as well. Each Ergotron employee is provided with a personalized, height-adjustable sit-stand workspace that fits their individual workflow needs, producing healthier, happier, more productive employees and a healthier organization overall. Many employees have experienced weight loss, increased bone density, less visits to chiropractors or other healthcare professionals, less time away from the office, and increased motivation to pursue other healthy activities outside the office or at home.
Ergotron has launched the Just Stand Wellness Uprising on juststand.org to help workers and employers better understand the inherent health risks associated with overly-sedentary jobs. Lack of regular physical activity raises an employee’s risk for a host of medical problems, such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Sitting disease may ultimately increase healthcare expenses and health-related losses in productivity that cost an estimated $225.8 billion a year. Employers face $12.7 billion in annual medical expenses due to obesity alone.
“The Fit-Friendly Companies Program offers a unique, easy-to-implement opportunity for corporations to increase employees’ physical activity, which will help improve their health—and their employers’ bottom line,” said Kim Friend, executive director of the American Heart Association, Metro Twin Cities. “Even people who haven’t exercised regularly until middle age can reap significant benefits by starting a walking program. A study published in 1986 in the New England Journal of Medicine found that some adults may gain two hours of life expectancy for every hour of regular, vigorous exercise they performed. ”
