Email marketing service provider, Emma, Inc. was honored Friday as one of Middle Tennessee’s 10 Best Employers for 2011. Additionally, the company was named to the first annual Tech 25, a listing of Middle Tennessee’s most influential technology companies. Both awards were presented by Nashville Post magazine.
The Post used employee research company, The Work Institute, to help build its Best Employer list. The institute asked employees of nominated companies to complete a questionnaire about employee benefits, financial incentives, job satisfaction and other information that allowed judges to understand employees’ view of their company.
“I have a sneaking suspicion that Emma is one of the best employers, period. Not just one of the best in Middle Tennessee,” said Sara McManigal, who heads up people development for Emma. “We’re all so supportive of each other’s work and open to helping out, whether it be to solve a product need or to volunteer at Meals on Wheels during our lunch break. This is a place were taking care for people isn’t an afterthought, it’s the only thought.”
With just over 100 employees, the eight-year-old communication company has grown from its Nashville headquarters to include offices in Portland, Denver, Austin and New York, and calls over 30,000 businesses, nonprofits and agencies its customers.
The other nine companies named Best Employers for 2011 were Aegis Sciences Corp., Centerre Healthcare Corp., Document Solutions Inc., Education Networks of America, iostudio, Medi-Copy Services Inc., Meridian Surgical Partners, Pinnacle Financial Partners and Vaco.
The inaugural Tech 25 honors technology sector innovators in Middle Tennessee. According to the magazine, companies are chosen for the list based on a variety of factors, including business size and scope, markets served, how the company’s technology affects the marketplace and future plans.
“We’ve got big, BIG things coming up on the product side of Emma in the next couple months – changes that will help our customers communicate more stylishly, simply and quickly through more channels. Knowing that, this award couldn’t come at a more perfect time. It’s almost like they read my diary,” said CEO Clint Smith. “We are truly honored that we were recognized for both of these awards. I mean, who wouldn’t want to get two pats on the back in one day, on a Friday no less.”
