Gold Award Winner, Chilean artist, Veronica García-Huidobro expresses her passions which are reflected in her painting through a deep connection with her horses. “I am an everyday rider and think about them most of the time along with the human figure, the sea, and nature. Showing animals in a range of different circumstances; in repose, in action, with other animals, and with people. Veronica’s work illustrates many of the fundamental reasons humans find horses so alluring. She captures their beauty, grace, and vitality, their deep feelings touch us. Her works speak to the passion she has found in her relationship with these majestic creatures. Veronica describes how her bond with horses and art making has enriched her life and created more meaning, “Since I have started making art I have a different perception of what surrounds me, I feel I have learn to see and I am continuously imagining forms wherever my eyes alight.”
This immersion into the heart of the nature, art, and equestrian life gives Veronica a unique opportunity to understand the mesmerizing presence of her horses and she use these experiences to inspire her art. She has drawn from her many life experiences and is part of a rich artistic tradition whose larger subject is the wonder of nature and the connections and experiences we share in life. Veronica creates her unique artistic alchemy through the way she is able to integrate abstract expressionism and the figurative in both a vibrant and muted palette. She brings a fresh approach to a long standing tradition of equestrian painting expressed with a contemporary flair.
Gold Award Winner, Edward Little, a professional artist living near New York City, is a naturalized American citizen who was born in the United Kingdom and moved to America in 1983. Once in the United States Little began freelancing as a designer and illustrator and obtained representation in New York and Los Angeles. He built a successful business serving clients in the corporate, advertising and publishing worlds including American Express, Citicorp, IBM, Mars, Pepsi, Pfizer, Reader’s Digest, UPS and Warner to name but a few. In 1996 he received his first mural commission and spent the following several years concentrating on interior decorative painting, trompe l’oeil effects and murals, whist continuing to undertake private portrait commissions.
Currently Little focuses on portraiture, finding unlimited inspiration and constant challenge in the human face and figure, and cityscape painting, focusing on New York City. He explains, “My journey began professionally nearly thirty years ago as an illustrator creating work stylistically in the realm of heightened realism. Today whilst I am far from what can be termed a ‘loose’ or ‘expressive’ painter I have begun to explore a less finely finished result, to introduce an element of atmosphere and individuality into my painting. Ironically I have found this seemingly casual approach demands more effort and focus than photographic realism...As an artist and an educator I have a strong, overriding passion in ensuring that the principles of representational drawing and painting are perpetuated, along with the principles of excellence... This stylistic shift can be seen in all my work but is particularly evident in the New York City paintings, through which I have sought to express some of my conflicting feelings about the place: its drama, its majesty, its desensitizing scale…The elements of my work are all around me, they exist in substance rather than being created in my imagination. I combine my experience as an illustrator, a painter who creates to inform according to a specific brief.”
Both of these Gold Award winning artist’s work speaks to this passion of finding meaning and expression through their art making. Their colorful and skillful art pieces stimulate thought about today’s contemporary art, provoking conversations about what art is today and how the culture and experiences in life, influence an artist's work.
