Michael Johnson Performance (MJP) announced today that FC Dallas Midfielder Brek Shea was awarded the 2011 Michael Johnson Performer of the Year Award.
“I’m honored to receive this award,” Shea said. “I know all of my teammates put in extra time at MJP to get better, and it’s nice to be recognized for it. I’d like to thank Danny Torres and the rest of the staff at Michael Johnson Performance for all the time and hard work they put in with us throughout the year.”
Michael Johnson Performance serves as the official athletic performance training partner of FC Dallas (MLS). Through this exclusive partnership, MJP honors one athlete each year who most exemplifies the center’s fundamentals. The Michael Johnson Performer of the Match award was established to recognize the player who most embodies the athleticism, determination and work ethic for which MJP is renowned. At the end of the year, the player with the most Performer of the Match awards is named the Performer of the Year. Previous winners include Kenny Cooper (2008), Jeff Cunningham (2009) and MLS MVP David Ferreira (2010).
Shea has had a career year in 2011, as he led FC Dallas back to the MLS Cup Playoffs with a team-leading 11 goals on the year, while also contributing four assists. In addition to his club duties, Shea has made a name for himself with the United States Men’s National Team, earning a spot on the squad that puts him in position to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London. To add to his impressive list of accolades this season, Brek has just been named to “MLS Best XI”, which distinguishes Shea as a top midfielder in the League.
“We are very proud of Brek for winning the Michael Johnson Performer of the Year award for the 2011 season,” said FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman. “He had an outstanding year for us, scoring a team-high 11 goals. I feel the time he spent at MJP the last few years has improved his speed, focus, endurance and strength. The hard work of all the trainers at Michael Johnson Performance has helped Brek become a 2011 MLS MVP candidate and an established member of the U.S. National Team.”
Danny Torres, MJP Soccer Specialist and former FC Dallas player, conducts all of the strength, conditioning, speed and power training of FC Dallas players on a daily basis at Pizza Hut Park, as well as administers warm-ups on game days. Torres also conducts training sessions with youth athletes at MJP in McKinney during the afternoons and evenings.
“Brek’s improvement in his speed, strength and agility have allowed him to excel to the highest level,” Torres said. “This has put him in a position to compete against the best players in the world, as he heads off to spend a month training with the English Premier League club, Arsenal, during the off-season.”
