In 1979, the country of Iran was undergoing great change as Ayatolla Ruhollah Khomeini led a revolution to replace Iran’s monarchy with an Islamic republic. The new book Unpaved Road: An Iranian Girl's Real Life Story of Struggle, Deception and Breaking the Rules (published by iUniverse) is the true life story of author Niki Bahara, an Iranian woman living in Tehran, writing of her experiences and hardships of life before, during and after the Islamic Revolution.
With political tension building in Iran, Bahara chose to go against the system as well as her protective family and stand up for herself. Viewed as a rebel by conventional society, she is forced by a combination of cultural boundaries and Islamic restrictions to make radical decisions that take her life on an unbelievably rocky road. After marrying, Behzad, a wanted journalist, Bahara and her husband leave their home country of Iran in order to survive.
At the age of 23, Bahara escapes with Behzad to Iraq through the treacherous mountains that border the two countries with the help of an underground Kurdish movement and smugglers. Finally in Iraq, they are held captive by Iraqi authorities. The journey is dangerous, and never seems to end. Bahara knows all too well though it is a necessary trek to take.
In Unpaved Road, Bahara recalls all of the action, romance and deception that ensue on her journey. To survive, she must quickly learn who she can trust, including her husband, Behzad. Unpaved Road is a true life story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
