Dentist Makes Solar-Powered Smiles

Downingtown, Pennsylvania dentist makes a powerful environmental statement.

Dr. William K. Reardon strives for excellence in every task which he performs. He sharpened his tradition of excellence at the University of Pennsylvania at the undergraduate college and the School of Dental Medicine. He continues the tradition at his Chester County dental practice by offering the on-site services of outside dental specialists and the timely, customized care of a dental lab, not found in most dental offices. The same gentle, caring approach that Dr. Reardon offers his patients is equal to the gentle, caring attitude he embraces for our environment. Dr. Reardon believes strongly in the importance of maintaining our environment and energy resources. He helps conserve patients’ time and resources by offering same-day service and a unique team approach by specialists under one roof; a roof which harnesses the power of solar energy.

Dr. Reardon conserves our natural resources (and even produces energy for the electricity grid) by his investment in solar panels. The addition of $225,000 worth of solar panels for his dental office in Downingtown was a serious but worthwhile venture, which he says, “is an investment in the planet in which we live. We feel it is important to continually lead by example in our community and with our patients.” Another way he helps the environment is by riding his ultra-light bicycle to and from work every day. His 45 minute and 30 minute commute (to his Phoenixville and Downingtown offices, respectively) is made twice daily when the temperature is above 32 degrees. “It’s just the lights that slow me down,” says Reardon with a smile.

PECO’s website gives a clear example of the impact of solar energy, “as it seeks approval to purchase 6 megawatts of solar renewable energy credits as part of the company’s ongoing fulfillment of the state’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards (AEPS).” They state that the proposal is, “Enough energy to power nearly 1,000 homes for 10 years, taking about 8 football fields of solar panels to produce 6 megawatts of energy. Once complete, the company’s proposal could result in the same environmental benefit as planting more than 48,000 acres of trees or not driving more than 133 million miles. While Dr. Reardon’s panels are a fraction of that size, the imprint he is making on the future is an obvious one. “I believe in continually growing and learning and passing that knowledge on to my patients, staff and communities in which I live. To me, the investment in solar panels is part of the ‘mark’ I’ll leave behind on this planet,” says Dr. Reardon.

Dr. Reardon continues his goals of excellence through ongoing continuing education for himself and his staff, which benefit the patients.
