Hashtags can now mean even more awareness, and donations, for nonprofits. HelpAttack!, a social network fundraising platform, now allows individuals to give small amounts each time certain hashtags are used.

HelpAttack!, a social network fundraising platform, now allows individuals to make small donations to a chosen nonprofit each time certain hashtags are used on Twitter.

This feature has already been used to raise funds for several Central Texas nonprofits with the #givetober hashtag. http://helpattack.com/powerof/givetober. Nearly $1,000 was pledged from 752 mentions of the hashtag. Near the end of the month, more than $11 combined was pledged per hashtag by approximately 50 individuals.

Oceana, a well known environmental advocacy organization, is currently encouraging giving and awareness and the #oceangiving hashtag.

This method of giving is unique for several reasons. Individuals, organizations, celebrities, and supporters can participate by making a pledge to give small amounts each time a certain hashtag is used in the anywhere in the “Twitterverse”, up to an limit they set. A Twitter account is not necessary to create a pledge or donate. Also, people can participate simply using the hashtag.

Previous cause marketing campaigns using hashtags, such as Southwest Airlines’ support of the Armed Forces Foundation (https://twitter.com/#!/SouthwestAir/status/135767355769884672) did not allow individuals to participate by donating themselves.

Hashtags are already used by many nonprofits and other organizations to consolidate online conversations, raise awareness, provide commentary, and unite online communities.
