Timmons Group, an ENR 500 Design Firm and a leader in civil engineering and professional consulting services, is excited to celebrate the dedication of the newly completed Douglass Elementary School in Rockingham County, NC. Located in Eden, the 77,442 square-foot facility was constructed on a 20.7-acre site, adjacent to the previous school site, and accommodates approximately 552 students.
Timmons Group collaborated with Moseley Architects and Barnhill Contracting Company to complete the new elementary school, while keeping the existing Douglass Elementary School in operation at all times during construction. The new state-of-the art school includes traditional classrooms, project and computer laboratories, a music classroom, a media center, a multi-purpose room, cafeteria, office-space and an outside play area. The existing elementary school consisted of original buildings constructed in 1938, 1954 and 1959, and housed the school until the students and staff could be moved to the new facility. The central area of the 1938 building that contains the auditorium remains in place to serve as a community center.
“We are proud of our long-term track record of service to the Rockingham County School system, and were honored to be part of the Douglass Elementary School project team,” said Andrew Moriarty, Timmons Group’s Director of Engineering for North Carolina. “The team was able to provide a sustainable building that will save energy and expenses for the school without sacrificing modern educational amenities. Given the budget challenges in constructing and maintaining K-12 education facilities throughout North Carolina, this sustainable approach is critical to providing top-notch facilities for our children in the future.”
The school’s design targets "Silver" level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Schools certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s standards. Sustainable features of the building will include a “green” roof, insulated windows, more energy-efficient heating and air conditioning system, drought-resistant plants, a plumbing system that reduces water consumption, a construction plan that called for the diversion of construction waste from landfills, the use of recycled materials in the building’s construction, an aggressive stormwater management system, and low VOC emitting paints.
