“These are tragic projections, which have been confirmed by previous studies. The average lifetime cost of care of a diabetic patient is more than $350,000. Our health system and economic competitiveness cannot sustain this.

Northwestern University researchers presenting at the November 16th American Heart Association Session in Orlando, Florida confirmed previous studies that predict more the 50% of the American adult population will suffer from diabetes or pre-diabetes conditions within the next eight years. While Americans walk an average of only 5,000 steps a day doubling this amount would actually reduce the current rate of diabetes in America by 50% (source: American Diabetes Association). Struggling to find a way to encourage Americans to move more, TrekDesk Treadmill Desks offer a solution.

The study from Northwestern University based its findings and predictions on patterns reflected in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1988-2008. Their predictions for the health of the nation are alarming:

  •     By 2020 - 83% of men and 72% of women will be obese or overweight.
  •     By 2020 - 77% of men and 53% of women will suffer from either diabetes or pre-diabetes

Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones, associate professor or preventative medicine at Northwestern’s Fienberg School of Medicine related his perspective on the study’s findings, “We've been dealing with the obesity trend for the past three decades, but the impact we project on blood sugar is a true shock. Those are some really scary numbers. When blood sugar goes up like that all of the complications of diabetes come into play.”

“These are tragic projections, which have been confirmed by previous studies. The average lifetime cost of care of a diabetic patient is more than $350,000. Our health system and economic competitiveness cannot sustain this. The human tragedy from shortened life spans and affected families is even greater,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks.
