With healthcare costs around the world growing increasingly unstable and more astronimical by the minute, healthcare organizations are increasingly supporting the less expensive alternative of community and home-based care. To support the trend toward community care, Bright Medical, a national medical supply company based out of Philadelphia, is increasing access to hospital beds at lower prices.

Surprisingly, Medicare and many private insurers encourage seniors to rent medical beds and other medical equipment, even though it is much more expensive to rent instead of purchasing medical equipment.

Currently in the United States, only an estimated 33 percent of long-term care funds are being spent on community-based healthcare services, while over 65 percent of those dollars go toward healthcare institutions like nursing homes. However, supporting a senior citizen in a nursing home is three times more expensive than supporting the patient at home. Furthermore, surveys show at-home healthcare services consistently rank higher amongst senior citizens.

“As Americans, we all know there is a healthcare crisis right now. However, many Americans are not aware of the financial, as well as psychological, advantages to home-based healthcare for the elderly and disabled. Bright Medical wants our customers to know they have the option of remaining in their own homes without spending a fortune. We offer hospital beds and accessories for much less than you think,” said Allison Riney, Marketing at Bright Medical.

Surprisingly, Medicare and many private insurers encourage seniors to rent medical beds and other medical equipment, even though it is much more expensive to rent instead of purchasing medical equipment.

In early 2011, Medicare began competitive bidding on some durable medical equipment, including hospital beds, resulting in a 30 percent savings. The bidding reduced Medicare’s three-year cost of a home medical bed to $3,200, a decrease of $1,300. However, companies like Bright Medical sell similar beds for less than $1,300.
In Delaware, the state’s Department of Health and Social Services has established the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ARDC) as a function within the Division of Services for Aging Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD). The concept behind the ARDC is to provide a center to educate the public, specifically seniors and their families, on the alternatives to the traditional healthcare option. This includes providing information on the benefits of home medical care.

The Welsh National Health Services (NHS) Confederation is also focusing on enabling people requiring extra care, such as disabled or elderly citizens, to live more independently at home within a care community. The Welsh NHS believes this initiative will not only provide financial benefits, but will be better for patients as it is a more safe and local alternative to traditional hospital settings.

According to a recent report published by Kalorama Information, a reputable healthcare market research company, sales of medical beds outside of the United States and Europe will more than double over the next five years. Currently, the medical bed industry is a $5.3 billion market.

By purchasing durable medical equipment for at-home use, such as a medical bed, the customer has more freedom to select options more conducive to his or her personal situation. Electric hospital beds offer higher levels of comfort and convenience. Adjustable hospital beds also feature various ergonomic functions for increased comfort. Such beds can be purchased for less than $700 through Bright Medical.

In addition to purchasing hospital beds, a patient would also need to invest in hospital bed sheets and other equipment. “At Bright Medical, we suggest purchasing Hospital Bed Air Mattresses, a bed tray table and adjustable bed side rails for maximum comfort and safety,” said Riney.

“And contrary to popular belief, all of these products can be purchased at very reasonable prices. Bright Medical is striving to increase access to such medical supplies to people at all income levels, we want all Americans to be taken care of, without emptying any banks accounts,” continued Riney.
Another smart investment would be bed rails for the elderly. These provide an extra level of safety, as well as assist in mobility.
