Asheville, the mountainous city in North Carolina known for its sustainable dining practices was voted one of the Top 10 Best Food & Wine Destinations in the United States by TripAdvisor. Joining the ranks with other cities like New Orleans, Chicago, New York and San Francisco, Asheville has caught the eyes and palates of traveler’s as a leader in the food and beverage industry.

The driving force behind Asheville’s success as a food and wine destination is commitment to a societal and gastronomical change supported by the creation of a Foodtopian culture. According to the Buncrombe County Tourism Development Authority, the farm-to-table movement is anything but new, but what separates Asheville is their creation of the world’s first Foodtopian society. With a long history of field to table dining, Asheville has 17 active farmers’ markets, nearly 250 independent restaurants and seven microbreweries.

The Renaissance Asheville, a member of the Green Hotels Association, understands the importance of protecting the environment and is proud to offer sustainable dining. Herman Turk, General Manager of the Renaissance Asheville is thrilled that the city of Asheville is getting recognized as being one of the nation’s top 10 Best Food and Wine Destinations. “This city’s forward-thinking and eco-friendly initiatives have helped make our faire something special. I can only hope more cities adopt sustainable dining practices and help protect our environment in a similar fashion.”

Located within the Renaissance Asheville Hotel, The Orchards Restaurant provides guests with a variety of sustainable dining options. In fact, roughly 80% of the menu is made entirely from locally grown produce. Chef Jessie Teasdale and his team work hard to make use of local produce and provide guests with fresh and healthy dining options. “By using produce from local markets, we’re greatly reducing our carbon footprint and supporting local farmers.” Jesse is always on the lookout for local sustainable farming; just last week he came across a farm that makes cheese. All the cows are grass fed, raised and milked on the farm. He is working with them so that the hotel can use their cheese on the menu at Orchards Restaurant, soon to be renamed The Writer’s Bistro.

In addition to being able to offer season menus, the hotel actively recycles and provides 100% sustainable to-go boxes. The hotel is also looking into a company that will come and compost for them this winter.
