GB Canoeing hope the UBE920 fluid rowers provided by Health Clubs at Home will help produce more GB Paracanoe World Champions like Pat Mahoney

HEALTH Clubs at Home are delighted to announce they are now the official sports equipment supplier for Great Britain’s Paracanoe athletes.

The exciting new deal means that GB Canoeing are able to use the Fluid UBE920 Upper Body Ergometer machine for talent ID days to help identify future elite paracanoeists. The First Degree Fitness machines create variable fluid resistance, using water, giving fingertip control of resistance from ‘feather light’ to ‘Olympic sprint’, enabling GB Canoeing to test athletes at all levels at the talent ID events. The movement is incredibly smooth, and responsive. Another main benefit of the UBE920 is that it can be adapted for wheelchair users to achieve their upmost potential, and hopefully produce future world champions and even Paralympians.

Steve Harris, GB Canoeing Paracanoe Programme Manager, is excited about the partnership, as the UBE920 is one of only a few machines in the world that can provide a good cardio workout for wheelchair users.

He said: ‘We are delighted to be able to use first class equipment that will help enable our athletes to get the very best from their training. The Fluid UBE920 upper body machines provide excellent strength and conditioning benefits and we are proud to be working with one of Europe’s largest independent fitness suppliers.’
Paracanoeing will be part of the Paralympic programme for the first time from 2016, beginning with the Games in Rio de Janeiro. It is hoped that the UBE920 fluid rowers will produce more elite athletes like Daniel Hopwood and Pat Mahoney. Pat has just been named as the International Canoe Federation Paracanoeist of the Year 2011, after becoming the first GB Paracanoe World Champion in the Men’s V1 200m LTA race.

Howard Braband, Health Clubs at Home’s Managing Director, who supply the machines, understands that the provision of vital training equipment via the partnership will enable athletes to continue to prepare for and build upon their achievements next year and beyond.

He said: ‘We are delighted to support GB Canoeing, by supplying equipment for the Paracanoeing training and talent days. The Fluid UBE920 is a superb machine and will really ensure the atheletes are put through their paces’

The UBE920’s fluid technology is at the heart of every piece of First Degree Fitness equipment, which means that with every effort, the correct, ultra smooth resistance is there instantly. This is very important to paracanoeists, who know just how tough it can be to squeeze that tiny extra bit of speed out of the boat in the race to the line, so the UBE920’s unique design allows the future GB athletes to train competitively, whatever the weather outside.

The UBE920 is part of a range of machines manufactured by Ausie based First Degree Fitness, which includes the award winning E520 and E316 Fluid Rowers, which are now being used in many of the countrys top health clubs.

The fluid technology, with its two chamber tank, offers a huge variation of the resistance range by varying the volume of water against the effort put in, and provides the most consistent linear resistance system available, making First Degree Fitness rowers and ergometers the closest experience to on-the-water rowing.
