Solution to Ensure SSA’s Websites Meet Regulatory Requirements for Online Access, Site Quality and the Protection of Private Information

With as many as 100-plus concurrent users contributing content to Web properties totaling more than five million pages, the US Social Security Administration (SSA) must ensure that its Web presence delivers the highest-quality user experience. This includes mandates that their Web properties be accessible to all end users, regardless of ability, and that any private information collected or stored across their sites, as well as other Web-enabled applications, is protected. In support of the agency’s goals for accessibility, privacy and site quality, HiSoftware Inc., a provider of content-aware compliance and security solutions, today announced that the SSA has selected the company’s Compliance Sheriff product for deployment across its intranet and public-facing web site, http://www.socialsecurity.gov.

Compliance Sheriff will help ensure that all SSA-hosted web content is in compliance with Section 508 accessibility standards, as well as other regulatory controls for the protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Sensitive Security Information (SSI), and Protected Health Information (PHI) via automated content monitoring, detection and reporting. Once deployed, Compliance Sheriff will provide real-time issue identification as well as an overall picture of Web accessibility and privacy compliance across the agency’s network of digital properties.

“SSA has done a tremendous job bringing together multiple internal constituents – including representatives from their accessibility, privacy and information technology teams – to design and execute a content compliance program that will serve a wide array of audiences both inside and outside the agency,” said Dana Simberkoff, vice president of public sector for HiSoftware. “Today the SSA manages private data for nearly 100% of the US population. With this significant responsibility, and in concert with their goals to move more and more services online, the SSA is uniquely suited to tackle the problem of online accessibility, privacy and site quality in a proactive way. With this project, they are serving as an important role model for other agencies, as well as private sector organizations serving similar communities.”

HiSoftware Compliance Sheriff provides federal agencies and other public sector organizations with a means to monitor online content across any Web property, intranet or SharePoint site for potential compliance issues – keeping information safe, appropriate and within regulatory guidelines. Compliance Sheriff’s content-aware rules engine allows organizations to consistently address regulatory mandates and other content governance issues such as privacy, Web accessibility, site quality and OPSEC information assurance based on hundreds of pre-defined checkpoints, as well as custom rules that can be easily defined as policies evolve. Detailed reporting further supports these automated scans to identify risks and alert privacy or other compliance officers to issues before they can escalate, effectively preventing costly fines or in the worst case, a data breach.

“With more than a decade of experience delivering Web accessibility and compliance solutions, HiSoftware has a deep understanding of the unique needs of federal customers,” added HiSoftware Executive Vice President Jeff Butts. “Our expertise in helping agencies like SSA ensure that their Web content is safe, compliant and fully accessible is evidenced by our extensive adoption across the public sector. We look forward to helping SSA achieve their compliance goals.”

12 of the 15 largest federal agencies currently utilize HiSoftware’s solutions for Web content compliance, including automated accessibility and privacy monitoring. The federal government’s Web 2.0/Gov 2.0 effort for transparency and open government relies heavily on intranets, collaboration portals and public websites to service the needs of citizen constituents, suppliers, employees and others.
