The Midcounties Co-operative is leading the way by becoming the first business in the UK to invest in a new breed of all-electric Mercedes-Benz van for its funeral service.
The zero-emission vehicle, the Vito E-CELL, produces no pollutants and has been fully converted and professionally fitted out as a private ambulance to be used to take loved ones from the place where they passed away to the funeral home.
Simon Fisher, Group General Manager for The Midcounties Co-operative Funeral said: “The Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL is a very exciting addition to our funeral fleet and one that can play a big part in helping us to achieve our environmental goals.
“We are very conscious of our responsibilities towards the wider community and determined, therefore, to do all we can to reduce our CO2 emissions. I have been searching for a suitable vehicle for a number of years and am delighted to have found the E-CELL.
“Having already invested in a brand new eco friendly funeral home in Kingswinford last year, all our funeral homes being supplied through renewable energy and being one the first funeral provider to offer Greener Goodbyes, this low carbon vehicle investment is an exciting next step in our environmental journey.”
The vehicle is an addition to the fleet of six hybrid efficient Toyota Prius cars the funeral business uses to reduce its carbon footprint, with a further six on order.
Mike Pickering, Social Responsibility Manager for Midcounties added: “As a socially responsible business we have an ongoing commitment to defend the environment. Working with our members we do all that we can to reduce our impact on the environment and have recently achieved the Carbon Trust Standard for excellence in managing, reporting and reducing our carbon emissions.
“Investing in a low carbon funeral vehicle programme enables us to develop our environmental practices even further and help us minimise the carbon footprint of our business activities.”
Midcounties Co-operative Funeral has installed a recharging facility at its Walsall funeral home - charging the vehicle is quick, and entirely safe with a maximum charging time of six hours from a completely empty battery.
Stephen Anderson, Emergency Services National Account Manager for Mercedes-Benz UK, said: “Electric mobility is the future and we are delighted that Midcounties Co-operative Funeral has become the first UK customer for our pioneering Vito E-CELL. It is the ultimate goal of Mercedes-Benz to achieve emission-free driving and our first-ever series produced electric van is testament to our commitment to deliver this.”
