Author-illustrator Wendy Federowich crafts a tale where curiosity does not always kill the cat

“Once upon a time, in a far corner of a pantry, in a large kitchen, in a white house with green trim and lots of flowers planted around, there was a bag of green beans. There were many beans in the bag just being beans, laying around waiting to be boiled and eaten by the family who lived there. One little bean, however, did not feel like laying there anymore.” So begins The Great Bean Adventure by author-illustrator Wendy Federowich.

In The Great Bean Adventure, two beans named Bart and Ben get out of their plastic bag surroundings to find out what’s in store for them in the great big world beyond. Through hardship and trials, two friends discover a world greater than they ever imagined. As the beans develop a friendship and discover the world around them, they also physically grow and wonderful things happen.

This children’s picture book is also an excellent medium for parents and teachers to provide a visually appealing way in engaging little ones to a tale where curiosity does not always kill the cat. In this gentle story of two curious beans, Federowich subtly reminds young readers that it is only in taking risks that one is truly free. Each lovingly-illustrated page in The Great Bean Adventure is also crafted by the author herself and one of her children, Camille Federowich.

With vivid imagery and story detail, The Great Bean Adventure shares Leo Buscaglia’s take on risk-taking, “that the person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live.”
