According to a 2010 article posted in independent.co.uk, there are about 67,000 school pupils who skip lessons every day. Author Bob Sullivan pokes fun at the alarming issue of truancy and invites readers to look at it in a different and more uproarious perspective in his book “Yours Truly”. This is a collection of unedited notes detailing excuses, ranging from the mundane to the outrageous, that were sent to Sullivan by a parent of one of his truant pupils.
Having spent more than 30 years in education, author Bob Sullivan has handled a fair share of truant students but the antics of one particular absentee clearly caught his attention. In the book, Sullivan introduces readers to a seemingly innocent pupil named Alvin who just happens to be a master at playing hooky. His attempts at feigning illness, injuries and psychological problems are substantiated by the sympathetic, albeit ridiculous, notes sent by his mother to explain his absence or, in some cases, his attendance to class. Printed in their original, handwritten form, the excuses start off with common eyesight issues and then escalate to more outlandish reasons like tooth problems caused by static electricity in the night sky.
Readers will have a hilarious time following the associated story of sorts that was assembled from Alvin’s exploits and his mom’s efforts. Interspersed with the author’s own observations and humor, “Yours Truly” will easily tickle one’s funny bone and deliver an experience readers will not forget.

About the Author
Bob Sullivan is a retired school teacher who spent over thirty years teaching and administering in both rural and urban Saskatchewan communities. During that time he received notes from parents that described the different reasons why their kids were absent from school. But none have provided as much entertainment as the notes sent by one particularly distressing and interesting family. He assembled these notes in their original form in two photo albums and, after much encouragement from friends and family, decided to share the extraordinary story in the book Yours Truly.
