Author Gloria Saddler-Reed writes the humorous adventures of Dewan as he tries to gain independence from his mother

Readers can follow the humorous adventures of a seven-year-old boy who tries very hard to prove that he is not too young to do big things for himself in one of a series of children’s book written by author Gloria Saddler-Reed titled Dewan!! “Ooh, Nuts.”

Dewan is a typical growing up boy who while trying to gain independence from his mother, almost always encounter mishaps which leaves a messy trail that always lead back to his mother calling his name. He tries to do everything for himself just to prove that he is big enough to handle the task at hand only to be proven wrong in the end.
The story of Dewan reminds readers of a child who seeks to break from his mother in order for him to learn about his environment and about himself. By trying to do things on his own without waiting for his mother, he oftentimes end up in trouble. His mother does not let Dewan go off entirely on his own, nor does she want to keep him hanging onto her apron strings since he is just a seven-year-old boy.
With colorful and descriptive illustrations, Dewan’s story teaches readers that regardless of what children may want or think they need, parents have a job to teach responsibility and independence to them. It is a lifelong commitment that is not always that easy.

By reading her book, the author would also like children to have the desire to hold on the positive side of life while striving to become independent adults. It can be hard to watch children stumble over a lot of things, but, it is in these moments that they are learning. The joy they feel when they gain a little more independence can be very rewarding, and a strong motivation to try new tasks in the future.
