Web Site Publishes New OSHA Recommendation for Acoustic Noise Levels in Laboratories

Laboratories with a mass spectrometer or a scanning electron microscope may have acoustic noise levels that exceed the OSHA recommended levels. The QuietVacuumPump.com web site recently added information on noise standards from OSHA and other regulatory agencies.

Once upon a time the chore of working in a loud and noisy mass spectrometry lab or scanning electron microscopy suite was a necessary rite of passage. No more. Regulatory agencies are starting to notice.

FarHawk Marketing Services posted information on the effects of noise levels upon laboratory safety and health on the QuietVacuumPump.com web site this week.

The information came from a recent United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) factsheet that recommends acoustic noise levels in a laboratory not exceed 55 dbA, typically the maximum noise level for normal conversation.

OSHA enforces regulations to restrict noise levels that permanently affect hearing loss. They cite laboratories as “a growing concern”. Noise levels in many laboratories are now at levels that affect safety and health.

“Laboratory workers have been laboring under unsafe and unhealthy noisy working conditions for years”, states Tim Hawkins of FarHawk Marketing Services. “It is reassuring that OSHA is aware of this situation.”

“Once upon a time the chore of working in a loud and noisy mass spectrometry lab or scanning electron microscopy suite was a necessary rite of passage. No more. Regulatory agencies are starting to notice.”

The OSHA recommendation was posted on a web page on QuietVacuumPump.com entitled “Decibels and Your Health”. The page also cites EPA and World Health Organization standards for indoor acoustic noise levels.

Sources of high acoustic noise include vacuum pumps and water chillers associated with mass spectrometers and scanning electron microscopes. Soundproof vacuum pump enclosures and water chiller enclosures are available at QuietVacuumPump.com and soundproof benches for mass spectrometers are available at http://www.QuietBench.com
