Campus California, a non-profit organization best known through its signature green clothing donation boxes in the San Francisco Bay Area is helping some of the local public schools to provide for their school libraries. The last school to receive a donation of books so far was Esperanza Elementary, an Oakland public school serving largely underpriviledged students. "Books for Schools" is an ongoing initiative aimed at increasing availability of books at local schools. The recipients can use them to replenish their libraries or distribute the books amongst the students as they see fit.

"Only during the last couple of years we distributed thousands of gently used children's books to public schools in Oakland and Richmond. We do not expect this to solve the larger problems plaguing our schools, but we believe it is important for everybody in the community to do whatever little they can to help", says Jan Sako, the Public relations manager for Campus California.

Most of the items collected from the organizations' donation boxes are sold to raise money to support training and placement of volunteers in development projects overseas, but according to Sako, the decision to donate the children's books locally instead was an easy one to make.

The books are distributed as they become available, any public school in the San Francisco Bay Area is eligible. Any requests for book donation s can be sent to jan(at)cctg(dot)org Currently all available books are distributed on the “first come-first served” basis.
