TayganPoint consultants and clients had a great time at the Hollywood Way workshop learning the secrets of storytelling from Academy Award Winning producer, Jana Memel.

After 11 nominations and three wins, Memel, decided to bring her wit and storytelling expertise to business professionals through the Hollywood Way workshop, which encourages participants to ditch traditional presentation techniques and encapsulate the audience through storytelling.

According to Memel, emotions, not facts, trigger memories and in order for people to get the most out of a presentation, the presenter must make an emotional connection to his or her audience.    The best way to connect with the audience, she says, is to get to know them. You don’t want the audience to be so bored that they feel as though they are stuck in a swimming pool, up to their knees in concrete. So take advantage of Google, Facebook or LinkedIn and find a common thread.

“As a consultant, it is important that I connect with my clients on many levels. Jana used real-life examples to demonstrate how to draw people in,” consultant, Rod Parsons, said.

With her real-life examples, Memel illustrated to participants that data-driven presentations are mind-numbing. People need to use adjectives to paint vivid pictures that capture the audience’s imagination. When you have a drink with friends you don’t whip out bullet points to describe your vacation, so why do that in business?

A big concern for several attendees was the stage fright they feel before a presentation. Memel eased their fears, by helping all the participants realize that they are the only one who is aware of their nervousness. The audience doesn’t know you’re nervous, she said. The audience doesn’t know that you missed a few lines. Her only advice: don’t wear white incase an ocean magically appears under your arms!
