Cloud computing and web-based electronic health records have the potential to capture far richer medical data than traditional EHR systems currently used at major healthcare centers. This is according to executives from the La Jolla, CA-based healthcare technology firm Perminova, who discussed their vision of the future at a recent conference on the Meaningful Use of Complex Medical Data.

The executives predict that a next-generation of web-based, cloud-centric software – like Perminova EP™ – will enable doctors and health systems to gather a treasure trove of medical and surgical data. Such systems will not only help healthcare organizations achieve “meaningful use” status, they will also provide medical researchers with tools and information to develop breakthrough treatments for a variety of diseases.

Perminova’s VP of Corporate Strategy and Finance Robin Bisarya, and Perminova Board of Advisors member Erik Viirre, M.D., Ph.D., spoke at the landmark Meaningful Use of Complex Medical Data symposium in Los Angeles.

Perminova, developer of web-based software for use in the nation’s leading cardiology centers, is pioneering healthcare’s move from outdated client-server technology to modern-and-secure cloud computing. The company’s first product, Perminova EP, is a module for electrophysiology labs.

The national transformation to electronic health records includes a federal requirement for “meaningful use,” defined as providing significant and measurable improvements that transform healthcare delivery. Perminova’s browser-based system captures deep, rich data from surgical procedures, storing the data in the company’s secure private cloud. Once data is aggregated within Perminova’s web-based system, it can be rendered anonymous and then compiled for use by researchers anywhere in the world.

“Simply switching to electronic medical records isn’t enough to comply with the government mandate for meaningful use,” Bisarya said. “Perminova’s web-based data structure is ideal for capturing and organizing medical data, and then the anonymized data can be queried by medical researchers, hospital administrators, medical device makers and pharmaceutical firms throughout the world. Examples presented at the symposium included Stanford University researchers who utilized electronic health records to develop a revolutionary, non-invasive way to quickly predict the future health of premature infants. Through capturing and analyzing electronic medical data of babies, researchers developed a scoring method that accurately assessed their physical well-being and predicted future medical problems and treatment needs.

“Perminova’s ability to gather rich data and provide it in anonymous form for medical research is an added value to Permanova’s core functions of web-based software for scheduling, reporting and billing of surgical procedures,” Dr. Viirre said. “Perminova’s data is centrally aggregated and universally available, yet still follows the strictest HIPPA guidelines and healthcare industry privacy standards.”

Perminova’s cloud-based system stores an immense amount of data that can be used for research purposes. For example, in a typical cardiac electrophysiology procedure, Perminova EP can generate more than 33,000 stored values, 2,700 data stores and 2,600 data types. Perminova recently secured $7 million in venture capital to fuel growth in developing and marketing web-based software and cloud-computing solutions for major cardiovascular institutes and healthcare systems, while seeking partners in the field of data analytics.

The Meaningful Use of Complex Medical Data Symposium, the first of its kind on this issue, was hosted by the Saban Research Institute at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the Laura P. and Leland K. Whittier Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. It was attended by scientists, engineers and clinical researchers who discussed how to utilize data from electronic health records and tools from modern information sciences to enhance the quality of patient care.

Prior to joining Perminova, Bisarya provided private equity management and due diligence services for a range of technology firms. He specialized in working with investors from India looking to provide capital to high-growth firms in the healthcare and technology sectors.

Dr. Viirre is in clinical practice at UC San Diego Health System, where he treats patients with tinnitus, vertigo and hearing loss, a specialty referred to as Neurotology. An Adjunct Professor in the UCSD Departments of Neurosciences, Surgery and Cognitive Science, Dr. Viirre also has participated in a variety of start-up companies, including Gnome Decision, Inc., which is pioneering the application of cognitive analytics techniques to complex medical data to aid medical diagnosis.
