Healthy VITA-SPELT® organic spelt pastas, noodles, pretzels and snacks pass the kid taste test!

It can be tough getting kids to make healthy food choices. But we’ve proven time and again that if you provide kids with healthful foods that taste great, you can help them develop healthy eating habits early on in life.

VITA-SPELT® organic whole grain angel hair pasta, noodles, sesame sticks and pretzels, made by Purity Foods, Inc., have earned the Kid Kritics Approved Seal, proving that it’s not that difficult to get your kids to eat well, if you offer them healthful foods that taste good.

“It can be tough getting kids to make healthy food choices, especially when they’re bombarded with advertisements for sweet, sugary foods that are high in calories and low in nutrition,” says Ellen Briggs, founder of Kid Kritics. “But we’ve proven time and again that if you provide kids with health foods that taste great, you can help them develop healthy eating habits early on in life.”

Several VITA-SPELT® products have earned the Kid Kritics Approved Seal, including VITA-SPELT® organic whole grain angel hair pasta, organic white spaghetti, organic wide white spelt noodles, and organic sourdough spelt pretzels, salted.

Kid Kritics identifies healthy foods that kids love by having kids do the taste-testing. A board of physicians, nurses, nutritionists and food consultants oversees the ingredient standards for all foods before they are allowed to be considered for the Kid Kritics taste test and seal of approval.

According to the Whole Grains Council, Americans aren’t eating enough whole grains. Nearly 40% aren’t eating any whole grains at all. Getting adults to eat whole grains is tough enough, but the challenge is even greater when it comes to kids.

When the Kid Kritics panel dished up some VITA-SPELT® organic whole grain angel hair pasta, the kids’ first reaction was “it looks gross!” But after they tasted it, 89% said it tasted great. (The pasta was seasoned only with a little butter and salt, so as not to detract from its natural flavor).

“The kids loved the smooth texture, and some of them thought it had a sesame seed taste,” Briggs said. “They were also interested in the protein value of spelt.”

Here are a few Kid Kritics comments about other VITA-SPELT® products:

VITA-SPELT® Wide White Organic Spelt Noodles: “Love this pasta… it tastes so good... I like biting into it.” The noodles were served with a little butter, rice milk, a sprinkle of sea salt and a topping of grated Parmesan cheese. “What a hit. Every plate was clean.”

VITA-SPELT® Organic Sourdough Pretzels (salted): “These pretzels were a huge hit! They all loved them. What was interesting is that many of these kids voluntarily identified the sweet flavor in these pretzels. They thought honey had been added to them. Were they surprised to learn that a grain could be so yummy sweet!”

VITA-SPELT® Organic White Spelt Spaghetti: This pasta was one of the few Kid Kritics products to receive a 100% top rating. “Everyone wanted more. What was interesting is that some kids noticed a bit of a sweet or nutty taste to this grain pasta. Both were a positive.”

All Kid Kritics-selected foods, beverages, supplements and recipes have to meet the Ingredient Standards set by the independent Ingredient Certification Board. Then this list of chosen products and recipes are taste-tested by kids aged 5-14 years. At least seventy percent of the kids have to say a product tastes good for it to be awarded the Kid Kritics Approved seal.

ABOUT SPELT: Spelt, a hardier and more nutritious cousin to modern wheat, is an ancient grain widely recognized for its many health benefits.Spelt is fast gaining popularity as a health food because it contains a broad spectrum of nutrients, including complex carbohydrates, sugar, soluble and insoluble fiber, sodium, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and more. Spelt is high in vitamin B2, niacin, manganese, thiamin, copper, and magnesium. Because spelt is highly water soluble, these nutrients are easily absorbed by the body. In addition to being loaded with essential nutrients, Spelt is a good source of dietary fiber, which has been shown to lower total and LDL cholesterol levels. And it tastes great, too!
