Home of the Year Awards

The December 2011 issue of Green Builder magazine features the winners of this year's Home of the Year Awards.

"This project was so well thought out before being built...it's a place to live a complete life, a true, naturally passive house that takes advantage of the local climate."

Green Builder Media, North America’s leading media company focused on sustainable living, recently announced the winners of its 4th Annual Green Builder Home of the Year Awards.

With entries from across the nation, the judges chose ten outstanding projects displaying the best and most cutting-edge green residential building. This year’s winning entries include designs that range from small and simple to super-efficient luxury proving that building sustainably can be done on any budget.

This year’s Grand Award Winner, the Kumuhau Subdivision, is a durable, low-energy housing project in Waimanalo, Hawaii, that not only exhibits functional use of natural surroundings, but water and energy-efficiency as well.

“We used all CFL light bulbs, dual-flush toilets, low VOC finishes and Green Label carpet. These were all little things that add up. We aimed at LEED silver but in the end we’ll achieve LEED gold,” says builder, James Keller.

The judges also applauded the reflective planning in the design layout. “This project was so well thought out before being built…it’s a place to live a complete life, a true, naturally passive house that takes advantage of the local climate.”

Other projects recognized include:

  •     Holland Yates Residence - Portola Valley, CA
  •     Magnolia Terrace – Emeryville, CA
  •     Passive House in the Woods – Hudson, WI
  •     Private Residence – Hadley, Massachusetts
