Several employees of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin participated in Durham’s 2011 Backpacks for Kids Event organized by the Volunteer Program of Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) and the Volunteer Center of Durham. Volunteers helped ensure that over 300 disadvantaged youths return to school with new school supplies and book bags.

Durham County DSS identified youths eligible to receive a backpack, all of whom are currently enrolled in either a public or charter Durham County school. The program helps hundreds of local children overcome one obstacle of starting the school year – lacking the school supplies needed for a successful academic experience.

Volunteers gathered at Durham Central Park’s outdoor pavilion and distributed book bags and supply kits to eligible students of all ages, from kindergarteners to high school seniors.

Elementary school supply kits included spiral notebooks, notebook paper, markers, pencils, crayons, pens, highlighters, scissors, facial tissues, glue and glue sticks, rulers, and copies of the hard cover book entitled “Illustrated Classics.” Middle and high school supply kits included additional items necessary for the upper-level students such as protractors, calculators and dictionaries.

In addition to volunteering at the event, the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin also donated supplies for the Event’s Arts and Crafts table where guests at the event were able to draw and color pictures, decorate hats and masks and create construction-paper cut outs.
