Visioneering Studios captured the award for Best Church Architect for the fourth consecutive year at the annual Solomon Awards which recognize excellence in the church facilities industry. The leading global designer of Christ-centered communities, Visioneering Studios believes church design “as usual” can be ineffective, and instead draws from years of experience in theme park, resort and retail design to conceptualize and construct “Destinations that lift the spirit” integrating religious, hospitality, and urban design elements.

Visioneering Studios captured the award for Best Church Architect for the fourth consecutive year at the annual Solomon Awards which recognize excellence in the church facilities industry. The studio won the award, as well as the award for Best Church Renovation (1-800 seats) for their redevelopment of the Hanger 61 building on the grounds of the former Stapleton Airport in Denver, CO.

Stapleton Fellowship Church purchased the building in 2010 and worked with Visioneering to repurpose, renovate and redesign the historic structure for a new life. The Hangar, originally built to hold turbo-prop airliners, now houses areas for worship, study, and classes for every age group. “The Lift” is a 3500 sf. worship center with an overlook “Sky Lounge.” “The Terminal” lounge, welcome area, and coffee bar has original sliding hangar doors with floor to ceiling glass walls that now enclose the space. Stapleton Fellowship Church meeting in Hangar 61 know that they getting refueled, repaired, and prepared for departure.

"We believe this project really exemplifies the future of sacred space,” says Mel McGowan, Visioneering’s president. “In the past, we've won awards for big suburban megachurches. But what is filling our plate these days is the redemption of existing spaces in the heart of communities. The redevelopment of the former Stapleton airport represents the largest urban infill, sustainable community redevelopment project in the country.”

Visioneering is known for high-impact “Design Intervention” projects which embody the unique DNA and personality of a faith community. Working with the historic hanger was a unique challenge for Visioneering and a great opportunity for Stapleton Fellowship, which previously met at the Denver School of Science and Technology.

“This ‘Jetsonian’ structure was one of the last vestiges of the ‘story’ of the site,” McGowan says. “We worked with the hangar’s great bones to make it work as a next generation community space. It was an honor and a privilege to work with this church which serves thousands of families in Stapleton, a two-square-mile community with no other churches. We are thrilled that this ‘destination that lifts the spirit’ has resonated with its community and is having eternal impact."
